PRESS RELEASE CONTACT: Harriman Announces Wager in 5th Ward Race PROVIDENCE Republican candidate for Providence 5th Ward City Council seat, Mark Harriman, today announced a friendly election night wager with Democratic City Chairman Larry Mancini, which was made in the opening days of the campaign. "Larry and I have been friendly for years," Harriman said. "I thought that an election night bet would be an appropriate way of answering his good natured jab in the newspaper," the candidate stated, alluding to the July 14, 1998 "A Conversation With" article in The Providence Journal in which Mancini interrupted Republican City Chairman Patrick Koelle in mid sentence and stated "Absolutely no shot of a Republican getting elected in the 5th Ward." "I laughed when I read it and quickly fired off the first challenge of my campaign," Harriman said. "I offered Larry a bet and he took me up on it, being the gentleman that he is." The loser on election night has agreed to toast the winner at the opposition headquarters. "I look forward to collecting my winnings. Hearing Larry say 'Here's to the Republicans' on Election Night will cap off a great campaign." |
